Class of '00 Motto: "Not finished, but just begun." ISABELLE HICKERSON, IDA PETERSON, LOUISE OLSEN, AXEL SJOBLOM. The first annual commencement exercises of the Grantsburg High School were held last Friday evening at the C.M.E. Church. As the class of '00 is the first one to graduate from the Grantsburg High, the interest in the event was great. The seating capacity of the church was taxed to its limit, and had more chairs been secured more people could have been accommodated with seats. The audience gave their closest attention and evinced their appreciation of the students' efforts by generous applause and the presentation of the handsome boquets of flowers by the relatives and friends of the graduates It is evident that Principal Steve has done his share of the work well, and the young people have imbibed the wholesome idea that they do not know it all, but have just been preparing to begin the true education. The first number on the evening's program was a song by the quartette, followed by the invocation by Rev. Knutson. [ in his appearance at the following year's graduation he is identified as Rev. Knudson ] Then the salutatorian Amanda Peterson spoke and in well chosen words expressed the thanks of the class to those who made it possible for them to enjoy to the best advantage the educational opportunities afforded them. An organ voluntary was played by Isabelle Hickerson, who did the musical honors for the class and whose playing was excellent. Ida Peterson gave an appropriate recitation in a very acceptable manner. Louise Olsen followed with a well-prepared essay showing that school education is not superficial but is a necessity of more or less value according to how it is used. Axel Sjoblom in his talk on the siphon demonstrated that he was familiar with his subject. In a lucid manner he explained the principles of atmospheric pressure and with the confidence of a baldheaded scientist explained what caused the water to run through the bent tube called a siphon. Then a vocal solo was rendered by Mrs. O.W. Anderson. Rev. F.A. Lawson delivered the commencement address. His discourse was intently followed in every word by the audience. It was the product of a bright, broad mind and was exceedingly appreciated. Mrs. S.F. Grover played an instrumental solo, after which Principal Steve in a few sentences presented the diplomas. The program was closed with a song by the quartette and then followed congratulations to graduates.
It was gratifying to find that Axel Sjoblom, the subject of an earlier profile, was in the first Grantsburg High School graduating class. And the growth in the next year's graduating class from five students to eight reflects the importance Grantsburg residents were placing on education It's frustrating for someone doing research that The Sentinel devoted its space to saying that everyone did a wonderful job without giving much substance of what they actually did, but this is a common failing of some newspapers even today. The other interesting aspect of this story is that the same musical performers emerge time and again: Mrs. S.F. Grover, whose husband was my great-grandfather's rival attorney in town, and Mrs. O.W. Anderson, both of whom performed at the play "Carl Jonson" as well as the 1901 graduation. ©1996 Larry Myrland Harnisch |
