Did You Know It?

On or about the 6th of November, 1900, the Democrats will discover the Jonah in their ranks. Then Billy Bryan [presidential candidate Williams Jennings Bryan] will be heaved overboard to be swallowed by the whale of anti-everything. That may not save the rest of them but will make the balance of their existence easier.

Four independent candidates have announced themselves. A whole ticket has been talked of.

A Republican club was organized at the courthouse last Saturday evening with a membership of 29. The following officers were elected: Pres. Isaac Burch; Vice President Clarence Nelson; Secretary William O. Olson, Treasurer Roy Roberts.

It's interesting to see what happens when two incumbents (Davidson and Myrland) aren't renominated by their party. It would be nice to know exactly what had happened to antagonize the Republican leaders, but it's shrouded in the mists of time. It could be the "wet" vs. "dry" conflict in Grantsburg at the time, but the Sentinel doesn't elaborate much on the election. It's clear that A.J. Myrland was nominated as superintendent of schools as a sort of consolation prize, but he declined. He won reelection, by the way. Stay tuned for News From the Past election updates from 1900.
