Burnett County is located in picturesque northwest Wisconsin. With the addition of visitors to the county, the population of more than 15,000 often swells to well over 25,000 on any given weekend or holiday. Burnett County covers 821.5 square miles of land, including 48.84 square miles of lakes.
The Sheriff's Department is responsible for all calls for assistance, dispatch of police, fire and ambulance personnel, jail, patrol, investigation, bailiff services to the Court, and civil process within Burnett County. However, there are several other agencies with jurisdiction in the county as well. They include the Siren, Webster, Grantsburg, Webb Lake, Jackson and St. Croix Tribal Police Departments along with the Wisconsin State Patrol and the Department of Natural Resources.

The Burnett County Jail, along with the Communication/Dispatch Center, is located on the third floor of the Government Center. The maximum inmate capacity of the jail is 29. When capacity is met, inmates are housed at the Polk County Jail.
Visitation of jail inmates at the Burnett County Jail is Wednesday from 6:00pm to 9:00pm and Sunday from 1:00pm to 5:00pm. All visitors must be at least 18 years of age or accompanied by an adult, must have a picture ID, and must sign in upon visitation. Persons who have been incarcerated in the Burnett County Jail during the previous 60 days will be denied visitation. All socks and undergarments provided for inmates must be unopened and in the original package. Inmates cannot receive phone calls and non-emergency messages will not be passed to an inmate by staff. Please note that when the Burnett County jail is at full capacity, it utilizes the Polk County Jail to house inmates. Please contact the Polk County Jail at 715-485-8370 to schedule a visit with an inmate being detained there and inquire about visitation rules. Correspondence must be delivered thru the US Postal Service. Address letters to an inmate as follows:

Civil Process
The Burnett County Sheriff's Department is responsible for the service of legal papers in Burnett County. If you have papers to be served, please provide the Sheriff's Department with two copies of the document with as accurate of information possible in regards to the person to be served. You will be charged for the cost of the service and/or attempts and mileage.
A Temporary Restraining Order can be obtained at the Clerk of Court's Office Monday thru Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm. Please contact them for criteria to obtain a restraining order.
Staff
The Burnett County Sheriff's Department employs a Sheriff, Chief Deputy, 10 fulltime deputies, one liaison deputy with the St. Croix Tribal Police Department, three investigators, three fulltime office staff, Jail Captain, Jail Sergeant, 18 dispatchers/jailers, and one fulltime transport/huber deputy.
