Burnett County Board of Canvassers
September 16, 2004

The Canvas Board of Canvassers met at 8:45 a.m. on September 16, 2004, to canvass the votes cast at the September 14, 2004, Partisan Primary based on the returns prepared by the municipal Election Inspectors. Canvassers Present: Betty Anderson, Barbara Johnson, and County Clerk Helen Steffen.

The returns of the Towns and Villages were reviewed. The use of the new Inspectors Statement caused some confusion. All Inspectors should sign the statement and list the time they began and time left (including time present for counting votes and preparing documents.) The codes for incidents should be used.

The following items were noted:

Town of Anderson: Tally sheets were secured in ballot bag. As the tally sheets are needed for the canvas, the Board of Canvassers had to open the ballot bag to retrieve the tally sheets.

Town of Dewey: The Election Inspectors did not sign the Inspector's Statement. (The statement is to be signed by three Inspectors and returned to the County Clerk's Office, even if no activity is recorded.)

Town of Grantsburg: The number of the last voter on the poll list was not indicated on the tally sheets.

Town of LaFollette: The number of the last voter on the poll list was not indicated on the tally sheets.

Town of Meenon: Write-in votes were listed on tally sheets for persons whose names appeared on a ballot of a different political party. (See page 76 of Election Day Manual. " Do Not Count Write-in Votes at a Partisan Primary When: 3. A candidate's name is printed on the ballot for an office and is written in for an office on the ballot of a different political party.)

Town of Oakland: The number of the last voter on the poll list was not indicated on the tally sheets.

Town of Roosevelt: The number of the last voter on the poll list was not indicated on the tally sheets.

Town of Sand Lake: On tally sheets there were ten slash marks in each box rather than five as indicated by the figures. Write-in votes were listed on tally sheets for persons whose names appeared on a ballot of a different political party. (See page 76 of Election Day Manual. " Do Not Count Write-in Votes at a Partisan Primary When: 3. A candidate's name is printed on the ballot for an office and is written in for an office on the ballot of a different political party.)

Town of Webb Lake: Ballot bag was tied in such a manner that access to the ballots was possible.
