Minutes
I. The meeting was called to order by Chairman Maury Miller, at 9:30 a.m. in
Room 165 of the Burnett County Government Center on Monday, February 21, 2005.
II. Notice was posted according to open meeting law requirements.
Present: Maury Miller, Charles Peterson, Gene Olson, Douglas Stubbe, Marilyn Kooiker, Mike Kornmann, Marleen Seul.
III. Motion to approve the January 17, 2005 minutes, was made by Charles Peterson, seconded by Gene Olson. Motion carried.
IV. General Business
A. Department Head Report - Doug Stubbe
"Who Moved My Cheese?"
Doug Stubbe reported on the joint teaching done by Marilyn Kooiker and himself on January 18 and 19. Ninety-six people attended. Stubbe reported positive comments on the teaching.Mike Kornmann 3-year review:
The review was completed on January 20. The draft written review has been completed. A positive final summary is anticipated.Status of January 17 Social Security discussion:
Stubbe noted he shared last month's Social Security discussion with District Director, John Preissing. Stubbe also noted two results were: 1) Preissing asked Maury Miller bring it up for discussion at the District WACEC meeting; and 2) the discussion was shared with Laurie Boyce, Family Living Program Leader, who is looking into some cross-divisional grant possibilities to address this topic.Burnett County Strategic Plan:
Stubbe reported Extension staff will be facilitating a strategic planning process with County Administrator, Candace Fitzgerald, for Burnett County. John Preissing, Extension District Director, will provide a short presentation on strategic planning during the March County Board Meeting.Updates from Dean's & Northern District Wislines:
Stubbe reported on subjects covered during the Wisline programs. The main topic of discussion was the Governor's Budget and its implications to UW-Extension.Expenses & Budget 2005 Update:
It was noted that, beginning this month, expense vouchers need to be signed by committee members. Time lines and deadline issues were discussed. It was decided to change the bill paying cycle time line to the Friday before each Ag/Extension Committee meeting rather than change the date of the meeting.Vouchers were gone over and signed and will be submitted to the County Clerk's office to be presented at the next Finance Committee meeting.
Other issues reported were the interviews to fill the half time support staff position; Candace Fitzgerald's interview on film for the Department Head Conference; and, congratulations to Maury Miller on being selected as WHCEC representative at the Public Issues Leadership Conference in Washington D.C. April 16 - 20.
B. Agent Reports:
Mike Kornmann, Community Resource Development
Mike Kornmann reported on the status of the Leadership Program. The curriculum has been narrowed down and marketing and recruitment will begin in March. The goal is a size of 16 with appropriate proportions for Burnett and Polk Counties.Kornmann also shared BCDA news which included the annual meeting, developing a business listing, the spring business symposium and the spring newsletter. The new Danbury representative is Chuck Govin.
Upcoming events for Kornmann include Superior Days, strategic planning, a Northern District Inservice and a JCEP Conference.
Marilyn Kooiker, Family Living
Marilyn Kooker reported on her activities for the month. Plans for the JCEP Conference are underway; cancellation of an HCE program on Soups, Stews & Slow Cooking for lack of response; Safe & Stable Families for Positive Parenting of Teens grant; Grandparents Raising Grandchildren E-Conference.Upcoming events include: WEAFCS Executive Board Meeting via Wisline; Asian Adventure Program at Frederic Elementary School; First Book reading; HCE program, "Clearing Clutter"; Family/School/Community Partnership conference in Baltimore; Northern District All-Faculty Inservice; JCEP Conference.
Maury Miller brought up the issue of meth usage in our county and asked if UWEX is addressing this in any way. Marilyn Kooiker will look into this and report at the next meeting.
Doug Stubbe, 4-H/Youth Development
Activities reported included a club officer class; a volunteer orientation class; Superior Days meeting; mini-portfolio submitted; "Who Moved My Cheese" teaching; 4-H newsletter submitted for a communicator award; SIPR survey developed and mailed.Upcoming events include Superior Days in Madison and the JCEP Conference in Milwaukee.
Julie Yezek, Wisconsin Nutrition Education Program
Marilyn Kooiker presented Julie Yesek's WNEP report for the past month.
V. Any Other Business
Gene Olson noted the Grantsburg Airport is going out of business and inquired about possible youth uses in that area.
Olson also expressed an interest in reading to Headstart children with the First Book program.
VI. Set Next Meeting Date
Next meeting date will be Monday, March 21, 2005 at 9:30 a.m. in Room 165 of the Burnett County Government Center.
